Bylaw vs by-law vs by law
Bylaw, by-law, and by law are one municipal rule spelled three ways. URLs and the navigation on this site use bylaw. Each city title uses that city's own form: by-law for Ottawa, Mississauga, Winnipeg, and most of Ontario; bylaw for Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmonton; règlement for Quebec, which people also search as reglement.
Bye-law is not the spelling of Canadian municipal rules. One line is enough: that word points at other countries, not these pages.
Questions
- Is a bylaw the same as a by-law?
- Yes. Bylaw is the one-word spelling used in our URLs and in Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmonton titles. By-law is the hyphenated form used by Ottawa, Mississauga, Winnipeg, and most of Ontario. By law, as two words, is the same search.
- What about bye-law?
- Bye-law is not the Canadian municipal spelling. It shows up in other countries' housing rules, not in these city pages.
- What is reglement?
- Reglement is règlement without the accent. Quebec cities publish a règlement municipal.
